FEMA Remapping of Areas Behind Levees

March 16th, 2011 Comments off

Memorandum

CITY OF DALLAS

DATE Marchll,2011

TO Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council

SUBJECT FEMA Remapping of Areas Behind Levees

FEMA has announced that it will suspend its use of mapping areas behind levees
that do not meet the 100-year protection level as if the levees do not exist.
Extensive pressure throughout the country has led to FEMA issuing a
memorandum stating that they will seek an alternative methodology to mapping
areas of potential flood risk behind levees that are not certified.
City staff has been informed by Region VI FEMA officials that all work on Dallas’
pending preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps has been halted for at least a
month. City staff will continue conversations with FEMA over the next several
weeks to further understand what the ultimate timeline will be for the issuance of
the new floodplain maps but it is important to note that it continues to be the
City’s goal to complete the levee improvements in December 2011 and
prepare for re-certification at that time. The US Army Corps of Engineers
remains committed to this timeline.

Further information will be shared once we have clarity about the remapping
timeline. The levee work will continue moving forward as planned and, thus, it is
with confidence that the 100-year flood protection level certification will be provided
prior to FEMA’s release of new maps.

News from Dave Neumann – District 3

February 22nd, 2011 Comments off
Please allow me to share some exciting updates about
Grocery Stores in Oak Cliff.

You have asked for more access and options for Grocery Stores in your neighborhood….I have listened and am pleased to report the following.
More to come!

Neighborhood Market by Walmart….Coming to Oak Cliff in 2012

I am pleased to announce the exciting news that a Neighborhood Market by Walmart is coming to Oak Cliff ! For several months, Mayor Leppert, City Staff, and I have been working quietly with Walmart to bring quality grocery stores to our neighborhoods. Walmart publically announced today, that it will make a $200 million investment that will more than double the number of locations inside the City with at least 3 new stores in Southern Dallas.

A Neighborhood Market by Walmart is slated for a site near North Hampton Road and Fort Worth Avenue in our District 3.

Almost 2 years ago, I pulled together neighborhood leaders to force the hand of an aging Colorado Place Apartments owner to either fix up the facility or tear it down. It was clear that crime and code violations were a threat to the surrounding neighborhoods. The City partnered with the owner to tear down the entire complex in hopes of redevelopment. What a great transition from what was the Colorado Place Apartments to a new Neighborhood Market by Walmart….with the hopes of much more neighborhood retail to come.

Walmart clearly recognizes this area is on the upswing and we’re thrilled they want to be partners with Oak Cliff.

Kroger….$2 Million Investment in the Heart of Oak Cliff

Our Wynnewood Village Shopping Center was once the center of retail and shopping opportunities for our Oak Cliff community. Tough economic times have hindered the ability to bring new retail investment.

Since I was elected as your Councilman, I have been continuously working with the owners of Wynnewood Village Shopping Center and Kroger to bring more quality retail options for the surrounding neighborhoods of Wynnewood North, Wynnewood Heights, Elmwood, Summit Lawn, and Beckleywood.

The anchor of the shopping center is clearly the Kroger grocery store. Years ago, I began encouraging Kroger to re-invest and renovate their store. I am pleased to announce that Kroger has renewed its lease for 5+ years and is committed to a $2 million renovation of their store and a new fuel center.

This investment reflects their confidence in quality retail for our Oak Cliff neighborhoods.

I will be hosting a neighborhood meeting in March to preview their renovation plans with you. More details to come.

Aldi Grocery Stores continue to invest in Oak Cliff

On March 9th, our second Aldi Grocery Store opens in Oak Cliff at the corner of Fort Worth Avenue and Jacqueline. Neighbors are already excited about a brand new grocery store option for our Oak Cliff Community.

In 2010, I was honored to participate in the Grand Opening of the 1st Aldi store in District 3. The new store at the corner of North Hampton and Illinois has been quite successful. Since the store has been open, the entire shopping complex has now been fully leased and renovated reflecting neighborhood support for new retail in Oak Cliff. As your Councilman, I was pleased to assist Aldi and the shopping center to expedite the city process in order to deliver quality retail and economic development in the Kiest area.

Dr. James McAfee, Turfgrass Specialist with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Dallas, will
teach you how to care for your lawn like an expert. Subjects covered will include the proper height
to mow, how and when to fertilize, how to water most efficiently and much more. These
techniques will give you a healthy lawn, save money and help prevent water pollution. Two 60-
gallon rain barrels will be given away at end of the turf session. Rain barrels were generously
donated by
CatchTheRain.com.
